How Artec 3D is supporting Ukraine

Global Registration works up to 20 times faster in Artec Studio 12.1

Save minutes and hours on 3D data processing with the extra fast Global Registration algorithm in Artec Studio 12.1 3D scanning software when using it with Artec 3D scanners and third-party sensors.

We are super excited to break this news: the very latest version of Artec Studio, which has gone live today, can save you up to several hours during post-processing – all thanks to the streamlined algorithms, in particular Global Registration.

Global Registration has always been one of the most resource-intensive operations in data processing. This algorithm converts all 3D frames (or shots taken during scanning) into a single coordinate system using information on the frames’ positions relative to each other. In essence, each frame is registered in the global coordinate system.

The processing of large datasets during Global Registration used to take quite a little while in previous versions of Artec Studio. This was especially true for the Geometry + Texture mode, which, in contrast to the Geometry mode, uses both the geometry and texture of the object to find the optimal position of each frame. Ensuring the highest accuracy of positioning, Geometry + Texture has proved to be the most popular mode with our clients, and it was the optimization of this mode that Artec’s R&D department channeled its efforts to.

Global Registration has proved to work 16 times faster for an average full-body scan.

A new way of positioning frames has resulted in a mind-boggling reduction in post-processing time. Our tests have shown that the boosted Global Registration algorithm works up to 20 times faster in the Geometry + Texture mode! For example, for an average full-body scan composed of 1,500 frames, Global Registration took 38 minutes to complete in AS 11, around 10 minutes in AS 12, and an incredible 2 min 20 sec in AS 12.1 – that’s 16 times faster!

The new Global Registration feels like a real godsend when working on larger projects. We have tested its performance on a 9,200-frame dataset of a large vehicle and are proud to share the results:

AS 11: 1 h 56 m

AS 12: 57 m

AS 12.1: 6 m 8 s

Going from almost 2 hours to 6 minutes – even we are impressed!

The vehicle scanned with Artec Eva for Global Registration speed tests.

The lightning speed of frame registration does not affect the quality of the final 3D model. The boosted mode works not only for all Artec scanners that capture geometry and texture, but also for the 3D sensors compatible with Artec Studio Ultimate.

In addition to the streamlined Global Registration, the current release provides several bug fixes and offers enhanced navigation and user experience, adding extra hot keys and undo/redo buttons in editing tools.

Enjoy the fastest and most user-friendly version of Artec Studio to date – Artec Studio 12.1!
