Different types of 3D printing technologies

Here is a quick summary of the main 3D printing processes used today. For more information on the best one for you, as well as availability, please contact your nearest service provider.

Stereolithography (SLA) printing

Stereolithography (SLA)

One of the most widely used 3D printing methods in the world of additive manufacturing. It uses a high-powered ultraviolet laser to draw on the surface of liquid photopolymer resin, creating thousands of thin layers until the desired object is formed. SLA is very precise, so it is usually used to 3D print teeth implants, jewellery and other small objects with high detailing.

PolyJet printing

PolyJet

PolyJet is one of the few additive manufacturing methods that 3D prints objects using multiple materials and colours simultaneously. It uses fine nozzles to spray droplets of liquid photopolymer (which solidifies when exposed to UV light) onto a build tray and form layers of the 3D object. This method is great for 3D printing complex shapes and items as well as delicate features for modeling and rapid prototyping.

Multi Jet Fusion (MJF) printing

Multi Jet Fusion (MJF)

The mechanics of this laser-free method include selectively applying detailing, transforming, and fusing agents along with heat across a tray filled with nylon powder. The process builds up the object, layer by layer until it is complete. The benefits of this method include high customization possibilities and a faster production process, making it great for prototyping and manufacturing.

Selective Laser Sintering (SLS) printing

Selective Laser Sintering (SLS)

This additive manufacturing technology uses a CO2 laser, and powdered materials such as nylon or polyamide, to create 3D printed objects. Heat from the laser fuses the powder particles together, layer by layer, until the final part is formed. SLS is perfect for small production, creating parts from different materials including glass, ceramics, or metals with high heat requirements or chemical resistance.
