Pet hair dryer

No doubt familiar to dog owners everywhere, this pet hairdryer features a glossy surface that would normally make it very difficult to scan. The device is also complicated enough that while digitizing it with 3D scanning and photogrammetry could help boost geometry capture and texture quality, a camera’s flash would be likely to distort the resulting images.

To get around these issues, the hairdryer was 3D scanned from four angles with the wireless, ultra-portable Artec Leo. This data was then combined with images captured using a camera equipped with an external Godox flash head and two polarizing filters. These prevented any glare from the device’s glossy plastic exterior affecting photo quality.

Artec Studio 18’s photo-texturing algorithm, which groups images by category such as size, camera type, and focal distance, was also instrumental to the creation of this incredibly realistic model at speed, and the full capture process took just over an hour.
