Hold out your hand and keep it unflinchingly still for 30 seconds. It’s hard, right? That’s why scanning anything that can move is a challenge (and it usually takes a little longer than 30 seconds for a good scan.)
For this scan, we asked our model to keep their entire palm and all their fingers tense, which made it easier to keep still. Using the Artec Space Spider, there was another challenge to deal with — it’s hard to maintain the tracking of the hand when navigating the edges, which makes digitizing tricky.
To counter this, we cut a hole in a sheet of cardboard and had our model put their hand through, up until the wrist. This creates a background, which allows for much easier scanning of the hand and its many contours and edges.
The entire scan took five minutes, and processing took about 10 to 15 minutes. A perfect scan of a human hand in less than 20 minutes!
