EGR metal connection pipe

A high-res 3D model of an EGR metal connection pipe measuring 10 × 11 × 13.5 cm (3.9 × 4.3 × 5.4"), a meticulously designed industrial component essential for the functioning of the EGR system in diesel engines. Easily scanned in painstaking detail with Artec Micro II, this curved metal tube is no simple scanning feat: several bends allow it to fit snugly within the engine bay, connecting the exhaust manifold to the EGR valve. Meanwhile, the stainless steel pipe features areas with a smooth, polished finish that gives it a metallic look, all of which is rendered in stunning 3D.

The part was scanned in a rapid 15 minutes using specially designed 3D-printed clamps. To boost the scanning process, the "Large object-complex" mode in Artec Studio was used, enabling comprehensive capture of all sides, while it was positioned according to the trajectory calculated by the scanner. To obtain data from the entire surface of the model, the part was repositioned into 4 different orientations.

During processing, which took just an hour, all unnecessary data from the clamps was removed, and the different scans were aligned into one geometry, followed by global registration with the key frame ratio set to 0.5. This setting improves frame registration by using 50% of all frames from the scans. As a final touch, the new Smart Fusion feature was used with a parameter of 0.07mm, resulting in a high-quality and accurate replica of the original object.

Experience unmatched realism as you rotate the model capturing every curve, including the precise flanges at the ends of the pipe, which are equipped with bolt holes for secure mounting to both the exhaust manifold and the EGR valve. You can see the finest thread cuts, perfectly rounded holes with defined edges, and even read the smallest digits, numbers, and letters of the serial number. Every tiny detail is rendered in the highest resolution, showcasing the distinctive quality of the Artec Micro II, a unique desktop scanner that delivers 5-micron accuracy when scanning parts for reverse engineering, quality inspection, rapid prototyping, or any other application that demands soaring precision.
